Tones.

The dictionary definition of tones is:
1. The overall lightness or darkness of an area of an image, similar in meaning to "luminosity"
2. The colour of all or part of the image, usually in relation to its warmth (bias towards red, orange and yellow) or coolness (bias towards blue and green).

Describing words:
Subtle. Contrasting. Muted. Dramatic. Sepia. Black and white. Lightness. Darkness.

My own definition of tones is:
The overall darkness and lightness which contrasts between each other to create the objects to stand out against the background.

Annotated photographs:

In this photo, we can see a girl and two boys together leaning against an old farm fence. The tone is shown through the black and white contrast of the clothes, fence, skin and background. The positive point of this photo is that the tones stand out in a subtle way, this is a positive factor because the photo stands out towards the audience and draws them in, in a more gentle and luring way without strong vivid colours which may put the audience off of observing the photo. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point to reveal. An improvement I would make to this photo would be to darken the levels and curves so the subjects would stand out more with the fence from the background.

In this photo, we can see a bench in a more run down and empty garden. This photo is also taken in a light sepia colour to show tone but also give a more olden day effect to it. The positive point of this photo is by using sepia an olden day effect is shown but also the tones stand out, this is a positive factor because the tones would catch the peoples attention but the olden day effect would tell the specific viewer a story of loneliness with an empty bench and an run down garden. I believe that this photo alone does not have a negative point or improvement to be revealed.

In this photo, we can see a pair of sun glasses facing the camera. A lighting effect is used just upon the sun glasses like a spot light as the rest of the photo becomes darker. The strong sepia colour used shows the tones in this picture. The positive point of this photo is that the sunglasses and spotlight resemble straight away to hidden identities actors go by, but also the sepia colour makes this all stand out, this is a positive factor because the sepia tones cause the audience to observe the photo while the story is being shown. The negative point of this photo is the surface before the glasses is slightly blurred, this is a negative factor because it can draw the attention away from the sunglasses. An improvement I would make, would be to unsharpen this photo to remove most of the blur.

In this photo, we can see the scenery of a beach inside a cave, the water and land is shown to come towards the camera while the cave entrance and the beach outside the cave is shown in the distance. The sepia colour was used faintly with the shadows in this photo too create tone. The positive point of this photo is the shadows stand out extremely well against the light sepia colour of the water and beach in the background, this is a positive factor because it shows the viewer the battle between darkness and lightness but also the cave and beach in a interesting way. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal.

Work Diary:
In today's photography session, we had to shoot objects or subjects in tone. First we had to shoot the photos in colour, I found this extremely hard to begin with because I was unable to see whether there was darkness and lightness contrasting between each other in black and white or sepia. This was my main struggle throughout the whole session. If I chose to take the photo in either black and white or sepia, it would have been easier. But by taking the photo's in colour, it gave me a variety when it came to editing.

My two selected photos:

This is my first selected photo which I have captured and edited to show tone. In this photo we can see a close up photo of a flower which is shown in a sepia colour. This sepia colour shows the tones of the light flower petals against the dark grass and stem. The positive point of this photo is that by using the sepia instead of black and white colour to reveal the tone, the photo becomes more unique and interesting, this is a positive factor because the tones become more eye-catching with the audience as it is not a 'basic black and white photo' like many other flower photos. I believe that this photo does not have a negative factor or improvement that can be revealed.

This is my second selected photo which I have captured and edited to show tone. In this photo we can see two hands with different coloured nails against a wall. The black and white shows the contrast between the hands and the wall but also the nails. The positive point of this photo is that the black and white nails stand out against the wall as well as the hands, this is a positive factor because the tones range for the audience, creating the photo to be more interesting. The negative point of this photo is that one side of the photo is extremely dark in the background and the other side is light, this is a negative factor because the background is then not fluent throughout. An improvement I would make is by using the lasso tool, I would select the lighter area and use the Hue and saturation lightness tool to darken it.

Further development:
For further development, I would like to use repetition on the first selected photo. After using repetition I would like to apply different colours to the flower to still show tone but in different duotones to create the photo to become more eye catching. For my second selected photo, I would like to apply a different colour to the hands to make them and the tones stand out more.
