My definition of self portraits is when the subject would position a camera in a certain way before posing in a way in which they can represent their self in a photo with a personal reason.
Annotated photos of Self portraits:
This is a self portrait by Yulia Gorodinski. In this photo, the audience can see a black and white photo of a women holding her hair up as she throws her head back against the wind. In the background, the audience can also see a bunch of dying bushes behind her against the dark grey sky. The positive point of this photo is that the black clothing against the pale skin of the photographer creates her to become outstanding and the focus point, this is a positive factor because it shows the contrast between the old and dying (The bushes) against the young and living (The photographer). I believe that this photo does not have a negative factor too reveal. An improvement I would make to this photo would be too take this photo from a different angle e.g. the side of the photographer, to create a more interesting photograph than an upfront one.
This is a self portrait by Ryan Burke. In this photo we can see a side shot of a more elegant 'Drag queen' with pearl necklaces and head bands with feathers as their eyes are closed while their face faces forward. The elegance of the photo is shown through the makeup as the photographer stands in an old hotel corridor alone. With this photo being black and white, the photographer has made the photo look old with the make-up and clothing style used. The positive point of this photo is the angle that the photographer has chosen to take the photo in, this is a positive factor because the facial features are focused on more as the audience can wonder and connect with the emotions the photographer represents, The negative factor of this photo is the fact that too many white pearls are used against the head of the photographer, this is a negative factor because the pearls then become a distraction to the photo as they seem to blend in with the head of the photographer. An improvement I would make to this photographer would be too lasso tool around the head pearls and darken them slightly with the brightness and contrast tool.
This is a self portrait by Kyle Thompson. In this photo we can see a far off shot of the photographer lying across a sewer tunnel while blacked out, smoking. The light comes from behind the photographer at the end of the tunnel. The positive point of this photo is the positioning and location of the model, this is a positive factor because the audience can interpret his photo as the 'There is a light at the end of the tunnel' while he seems to against this casually and rather stay in the shadows and be himself. The negative point of this photo is the light at the end of the tunnel is a little too bright, this is a negative factor because it becomes the focus point instead of the model and can put the audience off of looking at the photo. An improvement I would make to this photo, would be lasso tool the light at the end and darken it a little more so it's more subtle.
This is a self portrait by Flora Borsi. In this photo, we can see a medium close up shot of the photographer with a cage over her head with the door open as the bird sits on her finger. All the colours in this photo are neutral such as the browns, cremes and greys. The positive point of this photo is it is surreal, this is a positive factor because it really draws in the attention of the audience for being 'different' but also more of a story telling sort of photograph that the audience are able to understand. I believe that this photo itself does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal.
Work Diary:
This is a self portrait taken by myself. In this photograph, we can see a medium close up shot of myself while my hand is clenched and my finger is slightly raised. While this happening my eyes are open widely while a pouting look is pulled by the lips. This whole photo was taken to resemble confusion and innocence. The positive factor about this photo is that the eyes stand out clearly against the soft focus of the rest of the photograph, this is a positive factor because it then draws in the attention of the audience for the correct things as they become emotional their self. The negative point of this photo is that the soft focus is noticeable, this is a negative factor because it becomes a distraction for the audience on the hair. An improvement for this photo is to lower the opacity percentage of the Gaussian blur.
