Depth.

The dictionary definition is:
A dimension taken through an object or body of material, usually downward from an upper surface, horizontally inwards from an outer surface, or from top to bottom of something regarded as one of several layers.

Describing words:
Bottomless. Deep. Fathomless. Tower. Abyssal. Drop. Cavernous. Distance backwards. Distance inwards. Downward measure.

My own definition of depth:
Depth is the distance which is created by blur behind a selected eye-focus point in a photograph.

Annotated photographs of Depth:

In this photograph there is shown to be a depth of field on autumn trees but also the path of leaves. The colours help the depth of field as it creates the trees to stand out as they go down in a straight line. The positive point of this photo is that the eye focus point is at the first tree which is seen in the photograph, this is a positive factor because it creates the audience to notice the depth of field of the trees. This means that the photo was successful throughout. The negative point of this photo is that the person in the distance wearing the red jacket becomes the eye focus point, this is a negative factor because the red jacket then becomes the focus point instead of the depth of field. An improvement I would make to this photo would be to clone the building over the person in the background.

In this photograph there is shown to be the depth of field. All around the pier and sky, there is just shown to be a grey mist. The depth is revealed through the pier going out into the mist with the subject standing at the end. The positive point of this photo is that by having the grey mist, the subject and depth of field of the pier stand out clearly to the audience with no other distractions, this is a positive factor because then the depth of field is noticed suddenly and draws in the attention of the audience. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal.

In this photograph there is shown to be a bench covered in raindrops as the sunset seems to set in the background. The background of this bench is also Gaussian blurred. The depth of field in this photograph is shown through the lines and planks of wood of the bench. The positive point of this photo is that the raindrops are the main focus point, this is a positive factor because the audience are then suddenly drawn into the depth of field of the bench. The negative point of this photo is that the colours of the sun set are an distraction to the audience, this is a negative factor because it means that the audience would be more focused on the colours than the depth of field. An improvement I would make to this photo would be too remove the colours and change the photo to black and white, this stops the main distractions to the audience.

In this photograph there is shown to be a line of trees on either side of a lake. The depth of field is of these two lines of trees but this photo also shows reflection. The main focus point of this photo is the ending of the depth of field. The positive point of this photo is that the photo is in black and white, this is a positive factor because the trees now stand clearly out against everything else revealing the depth of field. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal.

Work Diary:
In todays photography lesson, we shot depth. I did not really enjoy shooting depth today because I found it extremely hard with the basic objects as I believed that most of the photos were extremely similar.

My two selected photographs:

This is my first selected photograph that I have captured and edited. In this photo, the audience are able to see the depth of field of the edge of the wall as is travels down into the distance. The wall also looks old and battered with the dead plants and moss growing on the side. The positive point of this photo is that by using a macro close up shot of the edge of the wall, the audience are then drawn into the depth of field. This is a positive factor because the depth of field stands out clearly to the observer as they wonder on how the wall looks so long and different to others that are seen in everyday life. The negative point of this photo is that the bush behind the wall becomes the eye focus point, this is a negative factor because it pulls the attention away from the depth of field. An improvement I would make is to clone the darkness of the shadows behind the bush over the bush to cover it up from the view of the audiences.

This is my second selected photograph that I have captured and edited. In this photo, the audience are able to see the depth of field of the blue painted shutters. The positive point of this photo is that by using a close up shot of the shutters to show the depth of field, the photo is more unique. This is a positive factor because the photo then stands out well against others revealing a different sight to the everyday life objects to the audience. The negative point of this photo is that the background after depth of field is a distraction, this is a negative factor because the audience are then more focused on trying to understand what the background actually is. An improvement to this photo I would make, would be to crop the background out of the photo only leaving the blue shutters depth of field.

Further Development:
For further development of the first selected photo I would like to use photoshop and convert it black and white, I would then like to apply each brick a different colour to another one. This would then create the depth of field to stand out in a more interesting and intriguing way to the audience.
