The dictionary definition of pattern is:
Regular arrangement of lines, shapes, colours, etc. as a design on material, carpets, etc; a pattern of diamonds and squares or a shirt with a floral pattern.
Describing words:
Chequered. Checked. Criss-Cross. Flowered. Radial. Linear. Grained. Fluted. Spotty. Striped. Pinstriped. Tartan. Swirly.
My own definition of pattern:
Pattern is the form in which certain objects or shapes go into. This form, creates either depth or more shapes as it all repeats itself over and over again. An example of this could be the layout of cobble stones across a pavement.
Annotated photographs:
In this photo, we can see a collection of different type of fruit slices, e.g. Kiwi, Orange and Lime. These slices of fruit all go up in a natural pattern of one coloured fruit to the next and then again to the next. By using this fruit pattern, the photo becomes very outstanding and eye-catching. The positive point of this photo is that by using this pattern, the photo becomes unique and colourful towards the audience, this is a positive factor as they become drawn into it. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal.
In this photo, there is revealed to be a never ending row of chairs, this also shows depth. The photo is taken in black and white which creates an old feel. The pattern in this photo is shown to be the row of chairs all positioned in the exact same way. The positive point of this photo is that it gives off an old effect to the audience, this is a positive factor because it creates the audience to remember the pattern of the chairs which they used to sit on with their father at an old football game. I believe that this photo also does not have a negative point to reveal. An improvement which could be made to this photo to make it more eye-catching is to keep colour every 3rd chair in the sequence in colour.
In this photo, there is shown to a pattern in the sand. This pattern would be the same wavy lines in which the sea has caused across the sand. By having this photo in colour, the pattern seems to stand out more than most photos. The positive point of this photo is that by having the pattern rising out of the sea and across the sand, the photo becomes realistic to the audience, this is a positive factor because it can link back to childhood memories but also the times in which the audience have had fun. The negative point of this photo, is that the colours of this photo do not stand out enough to reveal the pattern, this is a negative factor because the photo can be ignored easily by passing by audiences. An improvement I would to take this photo is by changing the levels and curves of this photo to make it stand out.
In this photo, there is shown to be the patterns of petals in a flower. This photo was taken in a macro close-up shot. The redness of the petals but also the slight heart shaped petals create a vibrant and happy atmosphere about love towards the audience. The positive point of this photo is the patten of this photo resembles love as well as the colour, this is a positive factor because it can draw people into their own little happy worlds as they all have different interpretations. The negative point of this photo is the vibrancy of the colour can draw in more attention that the pattern does, this is a negative factor because then the photo does not get complimented for the real reason it was taken. An improvement I would make to this photo, would be too darken the contrast levels of this photo.
Work diary:
In todays photography session, we had to shoot pattern. I found by trying to shoot pattern, it was harder than what it originally seemed to be, this is because most patterns were exactly the same or very similar on the college grounds. My struggles in todays session was to produce a large amount of photos of patterns, this is because I struggled with trying to realise the patterns in which I see in everyday life and ignore. The positive factor out of todays lesson is that now I realise and see patterns as patterns due to my research about it.
My two selected photos:
This is my first selected photo in which I have captured then edited. In this shot, we are able to see the pattern of bricks which form a wall. The tones of this photo are also dark and the brick pattern ranges in colour. The positive point of this photo is that by having dark tones, the patterns in the brick become noticeable, this is a positive factor because it means that the audience will see the formal element in this photo in which they never have seen before. The negative point of this photo would be the dark marks/cobwebs in the top corner of this photo, this is a negative factor because it means that the attention is drawn away from the pattern and onto that. The improvement I could make to this photo would be to crop the top section away so the photo again is based upon the pattern.
This is my second selected photo which I have chosen to capture then edit. In this shot, we are able to see an old eroded drain pipe with a leaf balancing on the edge. The pattern seen in this photo would be the rings which start from a small circle in the middle too bigger rings around the edge. The positive point of this photo is that it really draws in attention for the eroded pattern it reveals. The leaf is also seen as a focus point on this photo. This is all a positive factor because it creates and reveals a perfect pattern photo which does not look like any other sort of patten photo. It's more original and interesting. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point or improvement to reveal. This photo is my favourite out of all my pattern photos taken.
Further development:
For further development, I would take my drain photo and cut it into pieces, after doing this I would piece the photo together but make sure that the way I have cut my photo would create another pattern.
