Lines.

The dictionary definition of a line:
Line in drawing refers to a type of mark that contains both a direction and a length.  Line is an art element.  There are numerous varieties of possible lines, including curved, bent, thick, wide, broken, vertical, horizontal, burred, or freehand.  Lines are frequently used to delineate shapes, forms and spaces.  The representation of volume, edges, movement and patterns can all be created using line.  Lines can create both 2D and 3D objects and figures.

Describing words;
Dotted. Curved. Solid. Liquid. Thin. Wide. Long. Short. Vertical. Horizontal. Diagonal.

My definition of a line:
Lines are seen everywhere. Many people do not see lines in their everyday lives because the lines create shapes after shapes. But also depth. A line is a mark which connects point A to point B.

Annotated photos of lines;

In this photo, there is shown to be a pair of shoes and legs covered in lines. The lines create a pattern across this persons legs as they criss cross over each other. The other line then travels across the back in a vertical view. The positive point about this photo is that the red soles of the shoe and the lines of the tights stand out together, this is a positive factor because it lets the photo stand out clearly against others but also makes the audience wonder what could be seen if the photo was taken higher up. The negative factor of this photo is the background, this is a negative  factor because its plain against the lines of the tights. An improvement I would make to this photo is by applying diagonal lines across the background to contrast all the lines together.

In this photo, there is shown to be a close up view of some old rotten pathway steps. The lines in this photo stand out as the cracks between each plank. The other lines can be noticed in shallow depth focus, these lines would make the pathway itself. The positive point of this photo is that the lines in this close up shot, are the focus point. This is a positive factor because it reveals a different story to each member of the audience as they wonder the deeper story of those lines. The negative point is that the extremely close plank to the lens is out of focus, this is a negative factor because it takes the focus away from the rest of the photo. An improvement I would make to this is by re-taking the photo a few inches away from the first plank to continue the shallow depth photo but also keep the first plank in deep focus like the rest of the planks.

In this photo, there is shown to be a shallow depth focus upon the line in the sand. The line in the sand seems to go out to the sea in the background which is shown as being blurred.The colours of this photo embraces the happy emotions in the atmosphere as it shouts out about warmth and sunshine. The positive point of this photo is that the line stands out as a line, it's not hidden like lines are in other photos. This is a positive factor because it keeps the photo simple for the audience instead of giving off confusion in the atmosphere. I believe that this photo does not have a negative point to speak about. I believe that this photo has no improvement to do either.

In this photo, there is shown to be curved vertical lines across the floor as they come up to the camera lens. There is also horizontal lines across the rocks further away in the picture. The curvy vertical lines across the sand bring in the attention of the photo but also place it upon the reflections in the water. The positive point of this photo is that the two diffferent styles of lines clash against eachother. This is a positive factor because it makes the photo more exciting and eye-catching but also interesting. The negative point of this photo could be that the colours of the sunset pull away the attention from the lines. This is a negative factor because it means that the focus point would be located on the original place the photographer wanted it to be.

Work Diary:

In this photography session, my work is based on lines. I found trying to take photos of lines a little hard outside because I was trying to look for the 'perfect' line photo. Due to this mistake, I was not able to produce a high amount of photos for my contact sheet. My strength in todays lesson, was being able to take unique photos including the rain drops from the wet weather. The only downfall of this session was that it was raining outside.

My two selected photos:

This is my first selected photo that I have taken and edited. In this photo we are able to see the lines of blackness between each block of pattern. The lines in this really stand out due to changing the levels and curves to create the pattern to go light and the lines between dark. The positive point of this photo is that the patterns make the lines stand out. This is a positive factor because it creates a huge focus point on the lines and creates the audience to become drawn in. The negative point of this photo is that the denim jacket can draw the attention away. This is a negative factor because it means that the audience will not focus on the selected topic. An improvement I would make to this photo is by cropping the denim jacket away.

This is my second selected photo that I have taken and edited. In this photo, the lines are based on the hair strands which show different varies of lines e.g. straight lines while the lines above curve. The vary of lines in the hair creates this photo to stand out against the lines which shape the ear. The positive point of this photo is by varying the different styles of lines in the photo, the more the lines become interesting and noticeable. This is a positive factor because the audience can now notice something they would be 'blind' too in every day life. The negative point of this photo is by including the ear in this shot, the ear now becomes the focus point of the photo instead of the hair lines. An improvement I would make to this photo is by simply cropping the ear out.

Further development:
For my further development on these photos of lines, I would choose to change the photos into black and white or sepia so the lines would either cause depth or tone in the colour change. This creates them to become more eye-catching and interesting. The physical experiments I could make to this photo is by  cutting these photos into separate lines before piecing them back together again. I would also like to vary the images of lines to cause depth in improvement to the photo's I have already took.
